What is Delusional Parasitosis?

Phobias and delusions can be mild to serious psychological disorders that should normally be treated by the medical community.

Theirs is often a misunderstanding between the two terms: Phobia and delusion when it comes to the excessive fear of arthropods like spiders and insects.

Delusional Parasitosis

Difference between Phobia and Delusion
“Entomophobia” refers to an irrational fear of real arthropods. Here, the fear involves a real stimulus for any insect or spider, encountered in everyday activities. For example, seeing a spider might trigger this intense fear. However, the good news is that entomophobia is easily curable with no much effect on the person other than limiting the person’s everyday activities.

On the contrary, there's a much more serious condition called delusions of parasitosis (DOP). It causes a severe and unbearable reaction to a virtual (not real) infestation. In general, delusions are mistaken beliefs and in this case the person wrongly believes that they are infested with an insect or mite or that they are being repeatedly bitten.

DELUSIONAL PARASITOSIS
Delusional Parasitosis is a false belief that one is being infested by insects such as lice, mites, fleas, worms, spiders, bacteria, or other organisms.

DEFINITION
Medically, Delusional Parasitosis, or Ekbom's Syndrome is a relatively rare disorder wherein affectants have a delusional belief of being infested or attacked by parasites.

The sufferer of delusional parasitosis reports parasites in or over the skin, in the stomach or bowels, around or inside body openings, and may also include a belief that the insects infest their home, environs or clothing.

A person with such belief may approach several doctors and other professionals asking for the cure for the supposed infestation. They will often bring small particles, dust, skin flakes and other material for the doctor to inspect. Since the material may be carried in a matchbox or an envelope, the presentation of sample materials has come to be known as the "matchbox sign."

Another cause of this disorder can be the stimulant drug abuse, especially cocaine and methamphetamine. For instance, excessive cocaine use can lead to a syndrome "cocaine bugs" where the affected person believes he has, or feels parasites crawling under the skin. Chronic methamphetamine abusers are often called ‘tweakers’ because they pick at their skin. These conditions are associated with high fevers and extreme alcohol withdrawal sometimes, often associated with visual hallucinations of insects.

Sufferers of these conditions may self-mutilate and scratch themselves to the point where they can cause serious skin damage and bleeding, especially if they are delirious or intoxicated.

Signs of DOP
  • Believes to have bites or skin lesions on their body from unseen causes
  • In addition to personal infestation, believes that home or workplace are "infested",
  • Reports having resorted to self-treatment with insecticides or other harsh chemicals
  • Has fear for others to get infested leading to self-imposed isolation
  • Has multiple, unsatisfactory contacts with the medical or pest control community
  • Can cause abandoned home because of the "infestation"
  • Reports that "bugs" are unseen or disappear after capture
  • Submits elaborately wrapped samples, often with very detailed collection information
  • Submits samples of body tissue or swabs.
Treatment of DOP
  1. Psychiatric therapy
  2. Antipsychotic drugs, sometimes
Delusional parasitosis treatment is best coordinated between a psychiatrist and a skin specialist or dermatologist. The dermatologist does a thorough evaluation of the sufferer’s body to make sure that there are no actual parasites. After this, the sufferer is referred to a psychiatrist so that their delusion can be treated. Besides this, antipsychotic drugs like Risperidone and haloperidol can be very effective. While people often refuse to accept psychiatric treatment and instead visit many different doctors in a useless search for a cure that will eliminate the parasites they imagine.

How Do You Know if your Scabies Treatment Worked?

Scabies Treatmnet

Scabies being a contagious and parasitic infestation, it is sometimes difficult to treat it completely. Hence there are a few things one should know when it comes to treating scabies. Have a look.

Possibilities after Scabies Treatment
It is not always true to say that the scabies treatment turns successful. People treated for scabies sometimes feel as though the medication did not work. Ineffective treatment or failure leads to frequent doctor visits and surplus use of potentially toxic drugs over multiple treatments. This may also create chances of further infestation, including Crusted scabies – a deadly form of scabies. And, with all this it is not required to mention about the money spent and stress associated with being unable to find a proper treatment.

Here, it would be significant to understand the ways to properly treat scabies and what to expect in the aftermath of cure.

Standard Scabies Treatment

The standard treatment for scabies includes topical ointments and scabicides – medications recommended to treat scabies. To ensure that scabies treatment is successful, proper procedure and guidelines should be followed.

Often, people are recommended to use permethrin cream to treat scabies. However, with the increase in the extent and number of scabies patients, the permethrin treatment usually fails. Yet another treatment recommended is the Lindane. But, the FDA has banned the use of Lindane for scabies due to its pesticidal properties and that it can lead to cancer and other deadly side-effects.

Medications like Dr. Scabies that includes natural ingredients like Sulfur and tee tree oil can prove effective in treating scabies. These are over-the-counter medications and do not need doctor’s prescription to buy.

The right way to apply these over the counter cream is: apply the cream 2-3 times a day on a clean and dry skin area. You can use them all over the body. The cream should be left on overnight. This will help the patient get relief from that itching that persists badly at night.

Taking preventive measures are also a must. In the morning, clothes and laundry that have been used by an infested person should be washed. Person's bedding and any other surfaces or items that have been touched by the infested person should also be washed. Things like upholstery, mattresses that cannot be washed should be vacuumed well. The individual should then wash the cream off of the body.

After the initial treatment, this exact routine should be followed a second time for one week so as to kill any mites hatched from eggs that may have survived the initial treatment. Although, there is no known medication that will surely kill the eggs, Dr. Scabies and some of the other natural treatments tend to do so. Plus, it is advisable to strictly follow the treatment by all individuals within the household at the same time, even if they are not experiencing symptoms.

Post Scabies Syndrome: What if the Treatment Didn't Work?

The treatment takes time to show its results. This is because it takes 48-72 hours for the lotion to kill the mites. Even after that, the eggs and feces that are left behind in their burrows may continue to annoy the skin until the body absorbs or expels the debris.

In addition, it is important to know that even though your treatment has started, it is still unlikely to be the end of the itching. The reason of post scabies syndrome is currently unidentified, but many scabies sufferers continue to experience scabies-like symptoms long after the mites have been successfully eliminated.

While some dermatologists believe that these symptoms arose because the body still tries to expel the debris left by the mites, other think that the body may be exhibiting a long-lasting immune reaction to the mites that was once but is no longer there, or possibly to the treatment.

To avoid the potential side effects when using any prescription drug, one should be certain to discuss how to use the medication and the possible side effects that might be hinder your comfort. A medical professional may be able to suggest some less severe alternatives.

Proper checkup, treatment and precautions are a must to treat off the scabies infestation completely in the first go.

Beauty Tips For Brides

Every girl dreams of looking flawless on her wedding day. A radiant complexion, beautiful attire and glamorous look are what make a bride look perfect. But all this demands a lot of investment both in time and efforts to have that amazing look on the wedding day. The more challenging part is to keep away skin imperfections away from the skin for the glowing and radiant skin on the wedding day.

Beauty Tips For Brides

Therefore, we have created the following blog to highlight some of the best and must-to-follow beauty tips for all the brides.

The first most important thing is to start as early as possible for better results. By doing this your skin will have enough time to focus on your skin and improve it accordingly.

Remember, perfect outer beauty can be achieved with a combination of both skin care products and the right diet and sleep.
Following are few tips you need to start following as a routine practice before your wedding day.

1. Cut Out Salt Consumption
Using salt while bathing can clear the dead skin cells but directly consuming it directly will make your cells hold fluids captive and you will puff up like a marshmallow. The consequences will be puffiness of eyes. Thus, it’s best to avoid salt consumption as much as possible few weeks before your wedding day.

2. Just Guzzle water
This is something you should do limitlessly. Drink at least two liters of water in a day. It’s must to keep your body hydrated as much as possible as it will help to flush out toxins from your system thus preventing dark circles, puffy eyes, and a bloated belly.
So, wherever you go to gym or to salon, don’t forget to carry a 1-liter water bottle along with you and fill it twice.

3. Focus On A Good Skin Care Routine
Investing in proper bridal skin care products will definitely give you the glow you are looking on your bridal day but if you want that it should last for a longer time then you need to put in a little extra effort.
  • Start using a gentle cleanser both in morning at during night. This will cleanse your skin properly clearing off all the dirt and debris that can clog your pores and also keep it hydrated.
  • Use a nourishing eye make-up remover along with cleanser every night.
  • Nourish your skin with a good moisturizer daily in the morning and night. A hydrating serum consisting of peptides will help in hydrating the skin, boost collagen, and make your skin glow.
  • A gentle exfoliating scrub can help to remove the dead skin cells and keep it clean and smooth.

4. Follow A Healthy Lifestyle-Healthy Eating Habits, Sleep & Exercise
Your skin is a reflection of your dietary habits, sleep patterns and stress levels. Therefore, it’s must to eat a diet packed with essential nutrients, take a good amount of night sleep and also practice meditation and yoga to fight stress.
  • Diet Don’t eat excess of junk food, processed foods, and foods rich in calories at least 4 weeks before your wedding. You should eat 4 servings of leafy green vegetables and low-sugar fruits daily. Some examples of low-sugar fruits are:  pears, spinach, celery, cucumbers, avocados and tomatoes. Cut down your caffeine consumption which will eventually reduce your stress levels. You can consume green tea, herbal teas and coconut water instead of coffee.
  • Sleep - A good amount of sleep is must to keep your body and skin healthy. By a good amount we mean a sound sleep of around 7-8 hours. Sleep is rejuvenating for the skin and reinvigorating for the body.
  • Exercise and Mediation - You are bound to be under natural stress before your marriage and the best way to cut it off is through yoga and meditation. You can practice few basic yoga postures daily for 15-20 minutes in a day. This will help to keep your body in shape and also release excess of tension from shoulder, neck and other portions of the body. A few minutes of deep meditation is a great way to balance all the energy levels in your body. So, take some time out from your busy schedule and sit with closed eyes for a while. You can focus on your breath or you can even play a soft music while you meditate. Walking is another great form of exercise that can contribute in your fitness. A half an hour of brisk walk is good enough to maintain your body.

Ayurvedic Herbs

Practitioners of Ayurveda, for hundreds of years, have slowed down the process of aging using special herbal treatments. Ayurveda believes that several factors contribute to our healthy skin and its newness. Correct balance in the moisture (Kapha), efficient nutrient and blood circulation throughout the skin (Vata) and effective chemical and hormonal metabolism (Pitta) are some of the most important factors in retaining our youth. By keeping a balance in our energies (doshas) – Vata, Pitta and Kapha using Ayurvedic remedies can bring them all in a state of equilibrium and hence we are able to keep our mind and body at finest levels.

It describes a term ‘Rasanaya’ that is used to describe any herb, food or activity that helps bring youthfulness and treat diseases. When these Rasanaya are takem properly, these can prevent early aging, keeping our mind and body young and active. These names may sound very strange, but can be easily understood with simple explanation. For the unique methodology of Kutipravesika, for instance, it is required that the person being treated should stay in a small shelter, which has only one outlet or door. However, there are holes around the shelter for the air to circulate through, but these holes are all very tiny.

Headache - Do I Need An Eye Check-Up?

If you have been experiencing a consistent headache for long then certainly you need a close examination for your eye. You need to get your eyes, eye nerves and the optic discs checked if you experience headache or pain in the eye. The pain can be a result of increased eye pressure in the head but there can be multiple reasons for it.
Headache- Dr Numb

The following blog explains the reasons of eye pain and the possible complications that can be resulted due to it.
Initially, most of us refer to a normal medical care in case of headache or eye pain. We prefer to visit the ophthalmologist or optometrist for seeking medical attention for the eye pain. But it’s not always that the eye pain is a result of an eye problem. Pain in the eye region can also be a result of headache which may give rise to a number of eye-related problems.

Let’s first understand what causes eye strain and then we will get into the complications that can be resulted due to it.

What is Eye Strain?

"Eyestrain" can result into eye discomfort and even headaches. Eye strain is a result of improper focusing or alignment of the eye. Headache due to eyestrain is experienced after straining eyes by working on for long periods of time on computer, reading, or doing things that need close eye attention such as sewing.
Eye Strain- Dr. Numb

In short, doing anything using your eyes for continuous and long periods of time can certainly lead to a headache. Therefore, it becomes must to use appropriate eyeglasses to avoid the discomfort.
Eye-complications that can result into severe headache
Cornea-related problems: Cornea has a rich nerve supply and that’s what makes it sensitive. That’s why a small speck of dirt in the eye causes pain. So, anything that affects the front portion of the cornea can cause pain and redness of the eye.
Sometimes dry eyes can also result into corneal pain. So, it is must to provide proper lubrication to cornea with tears released from glands near the eye. If the lubrication is inadequate then the front part of the cornea gets directly exposed to the air which causes pain. Dry eyes often lead to redness, itchiness, burning sensations, fluctuating blurred vision.

Eye Inflammation: Inflammation inside the eyes or in the surrounding region can also lead to pain which also results into redness and swelling of the eye. This eye condition is generally examined with the help of a microscope (slit lamp). Tumors behind the eye are more painful than the ones inside the eyes. The pain is constant and leads to forward bulging of the eye. It can also lead to loss of vision or problems with peripheral vision.

Glaucoma: Although open angle glaucoma which is common is painless but an acute attack of angle closure glaucoma causes pain, blurry vision and a firm red eye. This attack may be a result of change of light conditions for example: going from dark environment to the one with excess of light- while leaving a movie theatre. This creates pressure over the eye and requires immediate attention to lower down the pressure. Mostly a laser technique is adopted to prevent future attacks.

Optic Nerve Conditions: The optic nerves are affected with the pressure variations over the brain. They can become swollen due to high pressure over the brain and also produce double vision in case of brain tumor. Pseudotumor cerebri (also called idiopathic intracranial hypertension) is a disorder that results into high pressure in the brain where there is no tumor developed. It is found in young, overweight women causing headaches inside or behind the eyes. It may also cause temporary visual loss lasting for few seconds, blurred vision, double vision or a whooshing sound in the ears. This is examined with the help of an ophthalmoscope.

Giant Cell Arteritis:  This headache disorder affects people above 65 years of age leading to permanent blindness if left untreated. There is no particular reason for this but inflammation of blood vessels blocks the blood flow. Generally, the primary symptom of temporal arteritis is visual loss which is sudden and painless. Other symptoms seen are headaches, tenderness of the scalp, pain or weakness of the jaw while chewing, fever, and weight loss, loss of appetite, muscle soreness, night sweats, depression etc. and feeling poorly overall. It can be diagnosed through blood tests known as C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate and a biopsy of the artery under the skin of the temple. But once it occurs, it gets difficult to get back the normal vision.

There is a huge difference between “who can inject” and “who should inject.” As such, research well about the nurse or doctor doing your injection. Don’t just judge by the price. You should get botox by only an actively board certified (ABMS, ASPS, ASAPS, AAD) dermatologist or plastic surgeon at a medical facility. Take expert opinion to make the final selection. Talk to people and check out the doctor before you visit them.

How to Use Numbing Cream For Getting Microdermabrasion Treatment?

Microdermabrasion is a popular technique for skin care due to its cost –effectiveness over other skin treatments like plastic surgery, chemical peels and Botox injections.
The following article is about the science behind microdermabrasion and use of numbing cream for a pain free procedure.

Numbing Cream For Getting Microdermabrasion

In Microdermabrasion tiny rough grains are applied over the skin that can buff away the exterior layer of skin. This technique is widely used in clinics, salons and beauty products such as scrubs that can even be applied at home. The procedure is done for skin of face, chest, neck, arms or hands.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
There are two main layers of the skin -the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer above the layer where cells mature and contains the dead skin cells.
Some portion of the lotions or creams that we apply on the skin passes through this layer but not the whole of it. Microdermbrasion is based on this phenomenon. Stratum corneum acts as a barrier between the external environment and the inside layers of the skin. It prevents everything but the tiniest molecules from passing through.  Skin imperfections like fine wrinkles, lines and blemishes appear in this layer only.
Microdermabrasion can also be called as micro-epi-dermabrasion which affects the stratum corneum.

Effects of Microdermabrasion

In microdermabrasion the stratum corneum in removed which the body considers as minor injury. Therefore, the skin starts working to renew the lost cells from the particular portion of the skin. The first hour of the treatment is marked by mild edema (swelling) and erythema (redness) which can even last for few days depending upon the sensitivity of the individual.
After the removal of stratum corneum, there is formation of new skin cells which provide an improved look to the skin.
Microdermabrasion is known to treat skin imperfections like sun damage, blemishes and fine lines. You may need to put on moisturizing cream after the microdermabrasion as it deprives the skin of moisture.
Microdermabrasion can also unclog the clogged pores especially for people who are allergic to Retin-A. But Mcrodermabrasion is not recommended for people who are infected with oral herpes.

People with the following skin conditions should not go for microdermabrasion:

    Fragile capillaries
    Vascular lesions
    Widespread acne
    Herpetic lesions (herpes)
    Warts
    Open sores
    Skin lesions
    Anyone who takes anti-coagulants
    Eczema
    Dermatitis
    Psoriasis
    Lupus
    Erythematosus
    Diabetes mellitus

Numbing cream can lessen the pain during the procedure.

Got a Black Spot???? Is it a Cancer?

Do you find some changes in your mole on your back or you face? Be cautious! Unusual moles, lumps or blemishes, may be a sign of melanoma or another type of cancer, or a warning that it might occur. Check out to know more.

There are a few things we never forget to do every week, just like routine check-ups – air in the car or bike tires, weekly expense calculation, washing clothes and household cleaning, etc. All these activities ensure that our personal property is in good condition. But, what about our own body and health!!

Our body too needs regular check-ups to ensure its well-being. For instance, moles should be checked every month for loopholes that might indicate a problem like cancer. Shocking!! Find more.

What Is A MOLE?

These are harmless spots that develop in infancy or later in life and can be found anywhere. Moles are usually small in size, round and regular with flat borders and an even color. Moreover, they usually don’t evolve or change shape.
A little change in your moles can be a BIG indication of disaster. So, here are ten things you should be looking for while self-inspecting the moles on your body. Have a look.

Changes In Color

The first indication of a potentially malignant mole is the extreme change in its color. If you find your mole with dark brown or grey, or varying colors, i.e. black in the middle and white, red, or pink in patches or around the borders, consulting the doctor is an immediate requirement.

Blurred or Unclear Border

Normal moles have a definite border. But, melanomas or cancerous moles are somewhat different. These tend to look blurred or distorted around the external circumferences. Sometimes, they can also feel a little elevated while touching and color may run into the nearby tissues.

Pain

Any mole that causes pain or tenderness on touching should be considered threatening, especially if it exudes blood. As such, visiting your medic immediately for a skin examination is must.

Evolving Moles

A mole that has discrepancies or contradiction, such as transitions in color, height, shape, or surface texture might be unhealthy.

Size

As said above, normal moles don’t grow in size than 6 millimeters in width. But, if any mole on your body is large or regularly growing in size, take an appointment to book a medical test.

Sores That Don’t Heal

A mole that doesn’t heal, irrespective of how much time, cleaning, and medication you apply can be a potential cancer risk.

Dysplastic Moles

People with dysplastic moles - moles greater than 6 millimeters in size, dark centers, and distorted edges are certainly at a greater risk of developing melanoma or cancerous moles.

Bleeding

Any mole that is lumpy, coarse, dry or scaly, especially if it’s itchy or tender to touch requires particular attention. Any mole that bleeds or builds a crusty coating needs immediate attention.

Asymmetry

Normal moles are usually symmetrical in nature, meaning they are equally sized. However, if you find a mole that’s uneven or asymmetrical, you may want to get it checked at.

Heredity

Unfortunately, many of our health problems are passed down by our ancestors or family members through genes. In the case of moles cancer, a history of the disease can put you at higher risk.

Besides the above mentioned symptoms, the rule of ABCDE is yet another guide to the check your mole for cancer signs. Tell your doctor if you have any of the following features:

  •  A for Asymmetry - One half of a mole does not match the others.
  • B for Border – Borders turns irregular, notched or ragged.
  • C for Color - The color doesn’t remains same all over and may include hue  of brown or black, or with patches of pink, red, or white, sometimes.
  • D for Diameter - The spot is larger than 6 millimeters across, although malignant moles can sometimes be smaller than this.
  • E for Evolving - The mole changes in size, shape, or color.

It is sometimes even hard for doctors to tell the difference between melanoma and a normal or healthy mole. Hence, it’s important to show your doctor any mole that you are doubtful of.

Although Brazilian wax seems like a horrific nightmare but if your waxer knows the right skill and is well-experienced then it is like getting waxed any other body part.

Following are few guidelines for a pain free large scale body wax session:

1. Don’t Go For Waxing During The Periods
You already know that’s going to be excruciatingly painful while all your hair will be removed. So, why take the risk when your body is already sensitive?
Waxing during your periods can lead to pain and irritation at your bikini area. Even it’s recommended not to go for waxing few days before and after the period.

2. Exfoliation Is Must
This should be done a night before your wax session. If you exfoliate your skin, it can remove all the dead skin and open up the skin pores which will enable a better waxing. You can use a sugar scrub for removing dead cells.

3. Take A Shower Before The Wax
If you are going for the wax session directly from the gym or after a long drive then it’s good to take a quick shower. Most salons have this facility so it won’t be a great deal for you.
The thing is excess of sweat makes it difficult to pull the hair. So, make sure your skin is dry and clean for the waxing procedure.

4. A Painkiller Can Make It Bearable For You
An I-brufen or Advil is advisable to take 30 minutes before the wax session. This cannot eliminate the pain completely but of course make it tolerable for you.

5. Use A Numbing Cream
A good numbing cream, if applied 30 minutes before the session can gift you a pain free wax session. Numbing cream is useful for bikini areas or people with highly sensitive skin to lessen the intensity of the pain when the hair is being pulled out. Dr Numb’s cream is a highly effective and popular cream which is known for its safe and effective numbing results.

6. Don’t Go For Next Wax Before Four Weeks
If the hair growth is not proper then there is no use of another wax session. This will only make the process difficult and painful. Make sure your hair are grown more than an inch before you step into parlor for next session.

7. Hygiene Is Important
This includes the measures adopted by your beautician to keep you away from infections. This includes using hand gloves, tying the hair properly, using personalized wax and using clean towels for cleaning and drying your skin.

8. Take Appointment In Advance
You need to be mentally prepared for the full body wax, therefore pre-fix your date for the session. This can provide you with ample amount of time for gathering enough information clear your doubts and get familiar with your aesthetician.
