What Triggers Back Pain and How to relieve it?


Sitting for long hours on chair and working, going upstairs and downstairs frequently, lifting or pulling bulky objects or overstretching – what all these things have in common? The excruciating Back Pain! Let’s learn more about back pain, its causes and effective solutions.    


It often starts with a twinge and gradually the pain radiates down the entire back. Trouble rises when it reaches the head. And with the same routine after 2-3 days, you pay the price – sleepless nights with pain that feels like a knife stabbed in my back. 
This is a common complaint with almost everyone, what we refer to as the Back Pain.
According to the Mayo Clinic, approximately 80% of all Americans will have low back pain at least once in their lives. In fact, 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time.
Although, back pain can affect people of any age, adults aged between 35 and 55 years are more vulnerable to back pain. Experts say that back pain is associated with how our bones, muscles and ligaments in our spine work collectively.
Causes that triggers back pain
The human back is supported by a set of muscles, ligaments, tendons, disks and bones. This complex structure of our spine is cushioned with cartilage-like pads. Problems with any of these can lead to back pain.

Here is a list of the common causes of the back pain:


  • Strain on muscles due to lifting something in an improper manner. Strain can also occur as a result of an awkward movement.
  • Structural disorders - Structural problems like ruptured disk (causes pressure on a nerve), bulging disks, sciatica, or herniated disk may also result in back pain.
  • Arthritis - patients who are affected with osteoarthritis commonly experience problems in the hip joints, lower back, knees and hands.
  • Abnormal curvature of the spine – the unusual curve in the spine curves in an unusual way the patient is more likely to experience back pain.
  • Cauda equina syndrome - People with cauda equine syndromes experiences a dull pain in the lower back and upper buttocks, along with analgesia in the buttocks, genitalia and thighs.
  • Sleep disorders - individuals with sleep disorders are likely to feel back pain.
  • Bad mattress - There is a greater risk of developing back pain if a mattress does not support specific parts of the body and keep the spine straight.
  • Everyday activity- activities like sitting for long hours, sneezing and coughing, overstretching, bending, pushing or pulling, etc. can also cause back pain in people.

You can try sleeping on your side and on a firm surface in order to prevent any curvature of the spine.




  • Gentle Exercise - It is not always suitable to take rest while in back pain. Instead of lying down, try out some gentle stretches and exercise. Try going out for an easy walk and gradually increase your pace if it feels comfortable. Regular exercise is also a cool idea.
